You can DIY rice water rinse with pretty much any kind of rice or you can buy already formulated rice water rinses.

However, there are a couple of things to keep in mind before buying commercial rice water rinses. I’ve covered these points below.

Rice water rinses only last for a few days. In order to extend the shelf life and make it available commercially, a proper preservative is an absolute must.

How Often Should You Do Rice Water Rinse?

Rice water rinses are potent. They should be used diluted and only a few times a week.

They are definitely too strong to be used every day and might cause an imbalance in your hair.

Do You Condition After Rice Water Rinse?

You should always condition after using a rice water rinse because it acts as protein on your hair.

If using rice water as a leave-in conditioner, it should be diluted significantly.

How Long Do You Keep Rice Water in a Spray Bottle?

It all depends on what else you add to the spray bottle apart from the rice water. If it’s just rice water, it won’t last more than a few days in the refrigerator.

If you add in some essential oils and vitamin E oil, it will last a bit longer than a few days but probably not more than 7 – 10 days.

For a longer-lasting rice water rinse, a preservative is required. Learn more about preservatives HERE.

Can I Spray Rice Water on Braided Hair?

If you’ve used rice water as a leave-in before and your hair took to it then it shouldn’t be an issue using it when your hair is braided.

However, it shouldn’t be used as a spray every day. Maybe after you wash the braids or every 5 – 7 days.

If you’ve never tried rice water as a leave-in before, don’t start when your hair is braided.

You will not be able to observe how your hair reacts to it in braids and make necessary changes to the spray.

What Are the Side Effects of Rice Water on Hair?

Rice water is tolerated by most people when used correctly as recommended. When used incorrectly, it can cause:-

  • Dry and flaky scalp
  • Build-up
  • Protein overload
  • Excessively dry hair
  • Hair breakage

These are effects that can cause a great deal of hair loss. That’s why I go on a lot about diluting rice water and using it no more than 1 – 2 times a week.
