4 Important Tips for Keeping Your Hair Young and Healthy

Age affects every part of our bodies, but the biggest telltale signs of the natural aging process are what we see on the surface, which includes our skin, nails and hair.

For the most part, we often only think that it’s our faces that give away our real age, though without the proper hair care, your locks can make you seem much older than you actually are.

While your hair may not wrinkle like your skin, it is susceptible to thinning, dullness, frizz, and grays, and the chances of all of the above happening increases as the years pass.

It’s an issue that can take a toll on our mental health, as Nadine Dorries shares with Gulf News, “You’re losing your confidence and you’re losing your ability to go out and actually face the world because you think what identifies a woman is her hair.”

While many will continue to mock those that wish to defy the aging process, a lot of women will find that their hair is what makes them beautiful.

Of course, they have more beauty than what meets the eye, but there’s a certain attachment ladies have with their hair, and when a bad hair day turns into a week, a year, and so forth, their image of themselves may start to suffer.

Much like we are with our skin, we want our hair to maintain that youthful glow for as long as possible.

Thankfully, we don’t need Botox to get rid of those signs of aging, as it’s all a matter of making certain changes in your lifestyle, not just in your shower routine.

To keep your hair looking young and healthy, consider doing the following:

Handle Wet Hair with Care

Experts iterate on Allure that your hair is most vulnerable when wet, which is why you should never comb or brush your hair right after a shower, nor should you be towel drying it. 

Air-drying is the way to go, or at least swap your terrycloth towel with an old cotton tee, which is much gentler on your locks.

To detangle, use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers in the shower while you still have conditioner in your hair.

Dial Down the Heat

While thicker hair will need a higher temperature for it to be styled properly, never have your tools on the highest heat settings.

Stylists often use a sort of heat protectant, as shown in a hair curling video feature on The Scene, but your locks are still susceptible to heat damage, so turn down the heat.

Stay Hydrated

Water is by far the most powerful remedy that will help restore your mane to its natural shine and strength.

When you don’t hydrate enough, it’s evident in your skin and hair, as both will dry out, and the lack of water can also hinder the process of new hair growth.

If your roots aren’t moisturized enough, they won’t be able to stimulate new hair growth, resulting in hair loss. According to Leaf TV, there are also connections between dehydration and dandruff.

Take the Right Vitamins

Fruits and veggies are great for your immune system and overall health, but it helps to know the specific uses of the vitamins and minerals, especially when you’re trying to address specific problems, such as any of the hair-related queries you might have.

OL Women say that vitamin E hydrates hair follicles and prevents premature graying. Vitamin E can be found in foods like tofu, spinach, and nuts.

Vitamin C is also important, which you can find in citrus fruits and broccoli, as it boosts collagen production for skin and hair.
