Reader Question: Jamaican Black Castor Oil Causing Breakage & Shedding

Today’s question is from W.C about the effects of Jamaican black castor oil on her hair. It’s not having the expected results of hair growth and controlling hair breakage.

I answer reader questions every few weeks on the blog. You can check previous reader questions and ask your own questions over in the Ask Abi Archives.

“I bought a bottle of lemongrass Jamaican black castor oil for my hair, but when I applied it to my hair it began to break and shed like crazy. Is this normal with the first use?” – W.C

Jamaican Black Castor Oil Causing Breakage and Shedding

You didn’t mention the brand of lemongrass Jamaican black castor oil. However, if your hair started breaking and shedding, below are the top 3 reasons why this would happen based on my experience:

1. Jamaican Black Castor Oil Treatment Too Intense

The combination of lemongrass and Jamaican black castor oil might have been too much for your hair/scalp.

Lemongrass is a powerful treatment for scalp inflammation and irritation and the best oils to combine it with are rosehip oil, lavender oil, jojoba oil, and sweet almond oil.

2.Allergic to Ingredient (s) in Jamaican Black Castor Oil

You are allergic to one or more of the ingredients in the oil. Is there something in the ingredient listing that is new to your regimen? This might be causing an issue.

Stop using the products for a few days to 2 weeks and see if the breakage/shedding reduces. If it does, then you may have to find another suitable product.

Sometimes, your hair and/or scalp just doesn’t agree with a product.

3. Related Issues

There’s another underlying reason you haven’t addressed, which was aggravated when you applied the lemongrass JBCO. What’s your hair history?

What was the condition of your hair before you started using the product? How long did you use the product for before your hair started breaking and shedding?

As a general rule, if you’ve never used JBCO before, start with 100% JBCO without any other ingredients added to it just to see how your hair will react to it.

Additionally, before you start using a product to address hair loss and hair growth issues, it’s vital to first of all address what led to the problem in the first place, work on eliminating it then start regrowth treatment.

Let me know what the ingredients of the product are in the comments section and I can provide more information.
